We are looking for an experienced and dynamic communicator to coordinate CARE’s regional Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) communications and media work across 7 countries working in close coordination with CARE’s global membership to raise the profile of and funds for CARE’s work in LAC.
This will include leading humanitarian communications work in the region and developing strong media relations. This is a short-term contract with the possibility for extension.
Provisional start date : December 1, 2021
RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS
1. External Liaison and Communications
Develop media strategy for regional and international media.
Act as the main point of contact for media and respond to requests for information from journalists, members of CARE International (CI), and donors, including arranging interviews and virtual press briefings.
Pitching of content to regional media contacts, national outlets and foreign correspondents, as well as global Spanish language outlets
Respond at speed (6 hours max) to requests for quotes from CARE staff in country offices as well as CARE partners and programme participants around CARE’s programmes and work
Work with CARE global media and content teams to proactively identify angles and prepare information and quotes for press releases.
Develop press releases, media pitches, stories and audiovisual content on CARE’s work in the LAC region and proactively work with country offices to identify strong stories and media angles for wider use.
Coordinate with CO communication focal points to identify and work with professional photographers / videographers to interview staff and project participants, write human interest stories and take photos and video.
2. Internal Liaison and Communications
Work with country offices in the region to develop a content team for bottom up led media and story angles, for info sharing and influencing key stakeholders
Act as focal point in the region for country office communications staff and develop a network to help gather and disseminate content.
Regularly liaise with CARE members content teams, especially CARE USA and CARE International Secretariat, to identify and develop content.
Facilitate media spokesperson training, content gathering (photo and video) and story writing training to key communications staff across the region as well as frontline field staff in highest priority countries.
3. Media Monitoring and Evaluation
Monitor print and electronic media for mentions of CARE and other topics of interest to the organization and inform CARE Secretariat media focal point and CI media mailing list where applicable.
Actively look for existing media angles and CARE programming initiatives in your region that CARE can conduct media outreach around and flag to CI media teams.
Work Experience : At least 5 years of relevant work experience. Proven experience with global and regional media is required.
Languages : Oral and written fluency in Spanish and English is required. French is desirable.
