Job Description

The International Potato Center (CIP) is seeking a dynamic Associate Scientist in Agrobiodiversity and Seed Systems to support the implementation of different global research activities linked to the One CGIAR NATURE+ Initiative and the Andean Initiative .

About the role : The successful candidate will design, coordinate and facilitate collaborative research and the delivery of outputs as planned in the One CGIAR NATURE+ Initiative and will contribute to the development and positioning of CIP’s Andean Initiative in the region.

  • Furthermore, the Associate Scientist will provide scientific backstopping to projects funded by the McKnight Foundation in Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru;
  • facilitate and promote collective action and knowledge sharing; and facilitate the construction of a shared R&D agenda on agrobiodiversity and seed systems

    The position will be based in Quito, Ecuador, with extensive travel both nationally and abroad. The Associate Scientist will report to CIP senior science leaders.

    Key responsibilities :

  • Actively collaborate with a team of international researchers and technicians to execute projects related to nature-based solutions (NBS), agrobiodiversity, climate action and food systems.
  • Designs, implement, co-supervise and monitor diverse research activities, including field experiments, surveys and participatory research.
  • Project management and partner coordination in the Andean region and internationally.
  • Facilitate dialogue among projects by organizing webinars, seminars, and other events to create a shared R&D agenda on agrobiodiversity and seed systems in the Andes.
  • Represent CIP in scientific events in Ecuador in coordination with CIP-Ecuador’s country manager.
  • Contribute to the writing of scientific papers and the dissemination and knowledge, including on agrobiodiversity conservation and seed systems.
  • Contribute to proposal development and writing.
  • Manage and analyze dataset, visualize, and interpret results using statistical software.
  • Supervise staff and students in their professional develop and research deliverables.
  • Organize capacity building activities, training events and workshops.
  • Contribute to preparing proposals and actively look for resources to support the research agenda.
  • Coordinate mainstreaming of gender sensitive project interventions.
  • Comply with applicable health and safety CIP policies and procedures.
  • Requirements

    What are we looking for?

  • PhD on agronomy, seed systems, agroecology, biosystematics, anthropology, sociology.
  • At least 8 years of professional experience in in agrobiodiversity and seed systems in the Andes or other highland tropics áreas.
  • Base education in Agronomy, biology, social sciences.

  • Knowledge of (agro)biodiversity, food security and / or nature positive solutions.
  • Basic knowledge of research designs, data analysis, statistical analysis and analytical software.
  • Stakeholder consultation and coordination skills with diverse actors.
  • Skills to run workshops and participatory research.
  • Proficiency as a communicator with solid team player attributes.
  • Good record of publications in peer reviewed journals indexed as the main autor.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish (Advanced level)
