Conservation International (CI) has been protecting nature for the benefit of all for over 30 years. Through science, policy, and partnerships, CI is helping build a healthier, more prosperous and more productive planet.
This position will work with the Senior Director International Policy to develop and implement a program of work focused on national carbon pricing efforts with links to natural climate solutions as part of country commitments under the Paris Climate Agreement.
Primarily this person will work on a project to achieve such a pricing mechanism in Ecuador and Peru alongside a team made up of staff from various departments in the organization.
Additionally, this position will support a team working to ensure the inclusion of natural climate solutions into emerging international carbon markets and, as opportunities arise this position may be asked to provide technical support to CI programs working with their governments to develop payment for ecosystem services or similar incentive programs.
This position is for 1.5 years through the end of 2020, with potential for renewal.
National Carbon Pricing
Provide project management for all work on National Carbon Taxes, primarily but not exclusively, under the Seligmann Innovation Fund.
This includes working with the core team to develop and track the workplan, organize internal and external meetings and provide reporting on project advancement.
Develop plans and products for internal CI communications on National Carbon Pricing work.
Carry out policy analyses and other research as needed for National Carbon Pricing efforts.
Develop policy briefs and capacity building material for strategic engagement with policy makers.
Provide logistical and content support for exchanges between governments and engagement with external partners.
Support development of fundraising proposals for further National Carbon Pricing work.
REDD Market development :
Carry out policy research and analyses to support the team, led by the Senior Director for Climate Policy, working on inclusion of REDD in emerging carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
Provide logistical and content support for team, led by the Senior Director for Climate Policy, engaging with negotiators on Article 6 and ICAO (including workshops and special events).
Payment for Ecosystem Services and other Incentive programs :
As needed, provide technical policy support to CI country programs working with their governments to establish PES or similar incentive programs.
Normal working environment with occasional off-hours work to accommodate colleagues in other time zones.
Possible opportunity to travel when skills are required.

Advanced degree in political science, economics or similar field or equivalent experience.
At least 3 years of experience in carbon pricing mechanisms or related policies, including PES programs.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Fluency in written and spoken English and Spanish.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Professionalism and diplomacy to engage and communicate with governments, policy-makers, CI colleagues and partners.
Ability to operate with considerable independence to effectively establish priorities and work efficiently under time constraints.
Willingness to take initiative and proactively identify solutions.
Ability to coordinate and work effectively as a member of a dispersed team.
Must have permission to work in Ecuador.
